Pit Smoked BBQ Pairings

by TJ Davis on June 16th, 2010 | Wine
In many regions throughout the United States, summer is synonymous with barbecue, and in the minds of many people, barbecue is synonymous with beer. For the deep, smoky flavors of pit barbecue, beers and ales are fine, but wines can be fabulous. Just as there are countless flavor combinations for barbecue rubs and sauces, there are equally as many options for pairing wines with them. Basically, the same general rules apply for barbecue as for meats or poultry cooked any other way: red for red, white for white. The only additional rule to remember is, it is okay to

Brew Dog, Rip Tide Stout

by J Frazzetta on June 14th, 2010 | Beer
Bottle/Tap: Bottle, pint +6

Lurking behind all of those summer and spring beers was this beast of a stout.  I had purchased this a few months ago with the intention of drinking in colder weather; instead I had it on a rainy evening hoping to illicit the same response.  The cold chill seemed to  help my mood for drinking a stout in the early parts of summer.

Marsanne at Tahbilk

by TJ Davis on June 9th, 2010 | Australian Wine, Wine
The Marsanne is a rare white grape variety grown in only four countries: France, United States, Switzerland and Australia. Thought to have been cultivated originally in the Northern Rhone Valley of France, Marsanne was introduced in the Nagambie Lakes region of Victoria, Australia in the early 1860's at Tahbilk, one of Australia's oldest and most beautiful wineries. Although none of the original vines from this first planting survived, cuttings made from them in 1927 remain some of the world's oldest producing vines. The vine took well to the Australian climate and the rare variety did very well at Tahbilk.

Redhook Brewing, Rope Swing Summer Pilsner

by J Frazzetta on June 7th, 2010 | Beer
Bottle/Tap: Bottle

When it comes to pilsners, there are people who will have you believe that since their beer was spiked with hops three times, you’ll have a refreshing taste.  So refreshing in fact, you’ll wonder how someone could sell you beer-flavored water.  Here is a better way to spend your money: buy a real pilsner.  Pilsner style beers are great for summer since they are usually light bodied and not very complex.  I picked up a six of this one and found it to be very refreshing.

I didn’t notice any overpowering aromas at first but did find a little
