Saranac, Black Forest Lager

by J Frazzetta on November 29th, 2010 | Beer
Bottle/Tap: Bottle

I picked up a Saranac variety pack a while ago and this was the only one I hadn’t tried.  I thought that since it was November and it is starting to get cold in New Hampshire, a darker beer would be on track.  I was right: a darker beer always tastes better in November.

Black Forest is a dark Bavarian style beer.  It is jet black and has a faint aroma that might be considered sweet to some noses.  I cracked it open, let it get warm and gave it a swirl or two.  Upon first taste I noticed

2007 Féraud-Brunel Cotes du Rhone Village

by Maria Glade on November 26th, 2010 | Pressed for Thought, Wine
I must begin with a bit of a confession; I am a Rhone super-freak.  I love the region, the food, the people, and I particularly love the wines.  If I could only drink wine from one region for the rest of my life, I would drink Chateauneuf  du Pape with a smile from ear to ear, so I may be a little biased toward them.  That said, I can say with complete confidence, this wine is fantastic and a great value.

This Cotes du Rhone Village is a blend of grapes from two first rate wine makers in Chateauneuf du

Uncle Charlie’s Punch

by Michele on November 24th, 2010 | Cocktails, Hot Drinks
Thanksgiving always conjures certain thoughts for me:  a big turkey dinner (obviously), watching the local football game with family and friends, and a warm house to enter after the game.  Throughout my childhood we would attend the Thanksgiving game with my dad, and I always felt frozen by the time we were home.  A hot bath and a cup of cocoa were what I needed.

As an adult, there hasn't always been a local game to watch, but there were plenty of family games of football and long walks throughout the neighborhood.  The results still are the same- I am freezing

Northampton Brewery Bar and Grille, Northampton, MA

by J Frazzetta on November 22nd, 2010 | Beer, Restaurant Review
Wherever I go, I try to find a local spot for beer and I try to go somewhere that comes with a lot of recommendations.  I was in Northampton for a show a few weeks back and that Saturday my buddy and I met up with a friend at one of his favorite places.  I’m always up for local craft brew and I went to the right place.  This locale is a sister brewery to the Portsmouth Brewery and Smuttynose Brewing in New Hampshire.

The building itself has a great set up with a chance to sit upstairs and have

Challenges for the Thanksgiving Table

by Maria Glade on November 19th, 2010 | Pressed for Thought, Wine
Thanksgiving wine pairing is no easy task.  First, you have to contend with the fact that turkey is a relatively light flavored meat, and, yes, I am going under the assumption that we are talking about a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner.  (Should you vary on that theme, we have much greater options!)  But, we pair that meat with some full flavor foods like cranberries, rich stuffing, sauces and gravies, all of which complicate our choices.

Generally speaking, when you pair you go for similar or contrasting but complementary flavor profiles, so how does one do that if the flavors of
