Beer Review: Bard’s, Sorghum Beer

bard'sBottle/Tap: Bottle

Once in a while I like to pick a beer based on the name and give it a try.  Since I had no idea what sorghum was, I picked up a bottle and did some research.  Sorghum is a grain that is raised in warmer climates, like China and other parts of the Pacific; it is a cousin to the sugar cane family.  Texas A&M is using sorghum as a basis for producing clean ethanol products.  I wonder if I’ll be able to crack open a bottle of this for my gas tank one day; that would be cool.

This beer is made with four ingredients: water, sorghum, hops and yeast, nothing else.  No wheat, barley, rye, oats- nada.  I was shocked and decided to give it a pour and taste.  It has a nice copper color in the glass and no real aroma, not one that I noticed.  I had a taste and found that it wasn’t bitter, but it did have an odd flavor to it.  I was intrigued and kept drinking to find the beer was pretty smooth and unique.

Since there are only a few ingredients in this beer, you can see why it isn’t very exciting.  Although, it is exciting that there are so few pieces to the puzzle, and such a smooth taste is the result.  It wasn’t a very strong beer, and I wished that I had an extra to try and get more flavor or something.  I wasn’t sure what to expect when I opened the bottle and poured it, but I got a nice surprise of a beer that wasn’t overpowering or watery and lame.  I’ll have to look into Bard’s a little more to see if they put other beers, but this gets my seal of approval.

  1. Thanks for the nice review. There are over 2 million LDA individuals in the US that cannot drink beer as it is made with grains that contain gluten (like barley). More and more people are voluntarily avoiding gluten. Bard’s Gold is made with gluten-free sorghum and is available in 32 states in the US and 2 provinces in Canada. Bard’s Gold currently is our only style. We refer to it as a great craft beer that happens to be gluten-free. Check us out at http://www.bardsbeer.com.

Wow, thanks for the info and beer. I really enjoyed this and will keep my eye out for other Bard’s brews in my local stores. I know a few people with gluten allergies, I think I’ll let them know there is a beer they can drink.
