Bottle/Tap: Bottle
In keeping a theme of dark beers, let me tell you about Super Bowl Sunday. I’m not going to lie: I don’t care much for football. I’d rather win tickets and backstage passes to see Beck play a show anywhere in the world, than attend the Super Bowl. To pass the time, I thought drinking a 10% stout would be perfect. In retrospect, this was a bad idea.
As I’ve always said, try not to drink a high percentage beer on an empty stomach. The one time I forget to heed my own advice, I was almost asleep by 7pm. Unbeknownst to me at the time, Brooklyn Brewery’s Black Chocolate Stout is 10%, and it is pretty strong. I needed several handfuls of chips to hold me until something more substantial came along.
This beer was jet black and bitter like an imperial stout. Oh wait, it is an imperial stout. Brooklyn Brewery modeled this beer after a traditional imperial stout, and they only offer it during the winter. One thing is for sure, this beer would certainly put you to sleep before it kept you warm.
Luckily for me, chicken wings appeared, and I felt a little better. As the beer warmed, I noticed that there really wasn’t a chocolate flavor at all. Further investigation led me to find out that there is no chocolate in this beer. Chocolate actually refers to the color of the malts added. Matter of fact, there are six varieties of black, chocolate and roasted malts in this beer. I love variety as much as the next guy, next time I’ll have a variety of food to accompany this beer.
