Bottle/Tap: Bottle
This is a beer that I have had before but was never close to a notepad to jot down ideas. I’d tell myself that one day I would review it. Well, I was with friends when I was offered a bottle of this interesting brew, and I was also near some scrap paper to take a few notes.
This is a 7%, you wouldn’t expect anything less from a Dogfish Head brew, and I was glad that it didn’t taste like a 7%. Right on the label it tells you that it is an IPA brewed with apricots, and that is no lie. I know I talk about a lot of fruit-based beers, but this is a beer that means what it says on the label: you know this is a real fruit ale the minute you pop the top.
I noticed a big apricot taste right off the bat and couldn’t even tell that it was supposed to be an IPA. There was a hint of a bitter flavor but not enough to make me recoil or clench my throat. All I really could taste was that apricot flavor, which was a welcome vacation from beers that pretend to have fruit flavor.
Like every Dogfish Head beer I review, this one gets high marks for taste and the ability to be enjoyed on a cool evening with friends. I wonder if those guys have ever thought of putting cactus fruit in a beer? Plums? For that matter they should give pluots (plum, apricot hybrids) a try; those are yummy. Heck, pineapple couldn’t be that bad, could it? Maybe someone should suggest these ideas to them. Until those flavors hit the shelves, enjoy this in four-packs wherever delicious beer is sold.
