Beer Review: Dogfish Head, Immort Ale

I really should buy some stock in Dogfish Head. Considering I seem to enjoy any of their non-IPA brews, I think this would be a wise fiscal decision. Until I get my broker on the phone, I’ll just tell you about another one of their great beers: the Immort Ale.

Right after I popped the cap, I could sense this would be a strong full-bodied ale, and boy, was I right. This beer came in at 11% and had a really dark caramel color in the glass. The label proclaims to have hints of maple, vanilla and oak. I certainly could taste the vanilla and plenty of maple; however, I wasn’t sure about the oak. I’m more of a pine fellow personally, so I couldn’t tell if there was any tree in this beer.

Tree or not, this beer had a sweet maple flavor, which I really liked. I made sure to keep this at room temperature and was rewarded with some excellent flavors. Usually I steer away from the high percent beers, but I’ve noticed that many of Dogfish’s brews are high percentage, and they don’t have that nasty alcohol flavor in the back of your throat.

After half a glass and plenty of swirling, I was able to open up more of the maple and really taste some vanilla. Still no oak, but I really was trying, I swear. Yet again Dogfish has made a beer I happily would return to, if given the chance. If you happen to be looking for something that isn’t your usual 11% and has some character, I completely recommend this ale. With the frigid weather we’ve been having this beer would certainly keep you warm.
