Beer Review: Dogfish Head, Pangaea

Beer

Bottle/Tap: Bottle, Pint +9

This is yet another mythological Dogfish Head beer that I happened to find in one of my local spots.  I had heard about this beer before; I just never managed to locate it when it was in season.  When I saw it I took the opportunity and dropped the cash.  I split this bottle with a fellow beer drinker, and the two of us really enjoyed the complexity of this brew.

First, this beer is named after the super-continent Pangaea. I won’t bore you with the history, so you’ll have to do that on your own.  The guys at Dogfish thought: why not create a beer with something from each continent that would unite people?  That is why this beer has ingredients like: water from Antarctica, ginger from Australia, basmati rice from Asia, muscovado sugar from Africa, quinoa from South America, yeast from Europe, and maize from North America.

You should drink this in a large wine glass or snifter and make sure to chill it for 30 minutes beforehand.  Right off, you can taste the ginger and a lot of other aromas flood your nose.  I have to be honest that I couldn’t tell the difference with the sugar and maize and yeast, but there was a barley wine consistency to this beer.  It is only 7%, and we both found it pleasant to drink.  I do recommend sharing this with someone because it can stir a lot of conversation.

Seek this out and grab one if you have a chance, I’m very happy that I found one.  This beer would go great with a steak or roast turkey.  I liked the color and flavor, and after a few minutes it really opened up.  This beer is released in September in limited quantities; so buy two.
