Beer Review: Grimbergen, Blonde

In the tradition of Belgium beers, like Leffe, we have the Grimbergen Brewery and this fine ale.  Last fall I sampled the Grimbergen Double Ale and really enjoyed it, matter of fact I bought a few pints for some friends when I met them at Strangebrew.  Since the weather is getting warmer I thought it would be appropriate to start things off with a light, crisp ale to get us out of the slump of winter.

This is another one of those monk beers, and I almost wanted to wear my Snuggie in reverse while I was drinking it, so I could pretend to be a monk.  I know what you’re thinking, and yes, I do own a Snuggie.  Not by my own choice, it was a birthday gift, but that is nothing I will get into with you.

This ale poured out very clean in my glass and had a good aroma coming out of the bottle. I was surprised to find that this beer was very light to the taste.  You expect something like this have a bit of bite to it, but there really wasn’t much, and I drank a good portion of it without realizing.  The Double Ale Grimbergen produces has a good twist at the end, which I was expecting for the Blonde, but I didn’t get anything.  It was a clean finish, and there is nothing more to it than that.

I was slightly reminded of a Unibroue brew without that funny aftertaste and found that I really enjoyed this Blonde over Leffe’s Blonde.  At some point I’ll do a taste test, I just wish that Belgium ales weren’t so expensive. Oh well.

Until we meet again, I’ll be chanting in my Snuggie over yet another beer.
