Beer Review: Monk’s Cafe, Flemish Sour Ale

Bottle/Tap: bottle

I know what you’re thinking: sour ale?  Why would anyone want to drink something that is sour?  I’ve heard of sour ales before, but I had never tried one. When I came across this I thought I would give it a try.  Much to my surprise, I kind of enjoyed it.

When I poured this into my glass I noticed that it had a really nice red color; this had a better red tint than most red ales I’ve drunk.  As soon as I opened the bottle I smelled something strange.  It wasn’t an overpowering sour smell, it reminded me of vinegar in a way.  I held my nose, I closed my eyes, and I took a drink.

Thankfully, I did not start kissing everything in sight.  Instead I had another drink because for some reason this had a sweet aftertaste.  At first, I could taste that sour, which wasn’t too bad, but it ended sweet with a citrus bite to it.  I almost would say that it had an orange flavor at the end.  Whatever it was, I was surprised.

I’m going to keep my eyes open for more sour ales, I want to compare and see if they all have this finish or if it was a fluke.  Either way, I’ll look into them a little more and see what I can get my hands on.  I was expecting something pretty awful, and I came away with something that was pretty good.  Let this be a lesson to you: don’t let the label fool you folks, just because it says sour doesn’t mean it will taste sour.

Know any good sour ale I should try?  Let me know, I’ll keep a look out, and let you know what I think.
