Bottle/Tap: Bottle
We spent an evening with friends a while back, and as the girls were busy making strawberry jam, the guys were watching Deadwood, ordering Chinese food, and enjoying libations. Hard work, I know. One such beverage I had was this blueberry ale from Paper City Brewing in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Our friends had picked up a six on a recent trip to upstate New York, and this was their last bottle. I opted to drink it, and to my surprise, they were ready to see it go. Neither one enjoyed this beer and wanted it out to make room for something else. I saw this as an opportunity to sample something new.
I popped the cap and was slapped with a strong blueberry aroma. This smelled like a pie, a really good pie, and I was hooked. After a taste I commented that this had a strong blueberry flavor, more so than Sea Dog. My friend said that you almost could taste the field where the berries were picked; boy, was he right. This beer was cold, and I really enjoyed it. My traveling companion, Miss Fruit Beer Connoisseur, didn’t like it very much, which was fine by me since I wanted to finish the bottle myself.
As a dessert, our hosts made a fresh blueberry cobbler, and I was tempted to drop some of it into my bottle, but I held back. The beer was great, and I was happy to have tried a new twist on an old favorite. I enjoy blueberry ales, and I’ll be adding this to my list of ones to look for.
Over all it was a good night with friends, swearing cowboys, and a few cold beverages. If you’re into fruit beers, keep an eye out for this one.
