Beer Review: Pennichuck Brewing Co., Fireman’s Pail Ale

November 16th, 2009 by J Frazzetta

Beer

Pail AleBottle/Tap: Bottle, 22oz

I was going over the beers I had to sample and came across this large bottle.  Nothing can motivate you to drink a 22-ounce bottle of beer more than the rainy weather.  I busted out the big glass, took the beer from the fridge and gave it a good pour.  Good color and strong aroma, this beer had me at hello.

There was a bitter flavor, to be expected from any pale beer, but it wasn’t overpowering.  I think having it in the fridge for about 40 minutes then giving a straight pour into the glass helped the flavor open up.  After the foam settled I really enjoyed the taste of this beer and found it hard to put it down.  I had to put it down so I could eat; you get my point.

Like all the beers I’ve had from Pennichuck, this one had a really crisp taste and made for a solid ale.  There was almost a creamy aftertaste and that got me thinking.  It just so happened that we had a little French vanilla ice cream left, with only 6 ounces of beer left I put in a few spoonfuls, gave it a good mix and relaxed on the couch.  The ice cream cut out the rest of the bitter flavor and made the sugars a little more enjoyable.

The only downside to beers from Pennichuck is that they come in large bottles, and I always feel like I should have another person around to drink them.  However, if the weather is bad you can just enjoy the beer from the comfort of your own couch.

Pennichuck is located in Milford, NH. Just like I do, you always should support your local brewer.
