Beer Review: Redhook, Slim Chance

The name of this beer says it all.  I really like Redhook; they are one of my favorite breweries to visit, and you can’t go wrong with their beers.  A few weeks ago we had been visiting friends and as I looked through their beer fridge I noticed this brew was laying down, so picked one up.  Slim Chance, I thought, slim chance of what?  I cracked it open and took a healthy swig.

I was glad that I didn’t read the label beforehand because I would have put it right back.  This was a light beer, and I don’t drink light beers.  If I wanted a light beer, I would grab water instead.  However, since I already had put my mouth on the bottle, I had to finish it.  I could have tried to reattach the cap, but my friends would have noticed that there was something missing from the contents.

After a few more pulls the taste began to grow on me.  I tasted a lighter version of the Redhook ESB, and I didn’t mind it as much as I thought.  The problem with light beers is that some really have no taste and you would be better off with water.  At another house I had a Bud Light, which I hate to admit, and found that the flavor was very flat.  It is no wonder people can drink so many of them; there is nothing there to suggest you are drinking beer.

Redhook got it right.  Slim Chance was a light beer with some bite that was a better alternative than drinking a full-blown ESB.  It was refreshing and tasted fine cold.  There was a slim chance I would like it, and I’m glad I did.
