Bottle/Tap: Bottle

There are some beers that you hear rumors about, and there are some you never find no matter how hard you try.  This one is the latter of those options.  I’ve been hearing about Saranac’s pumpkin flavored beer for a few years and never found it anywhere. . .until I made a trip to Warner, New Hampshire, to watch the Bruins with a friend.  We needed something to drown the sorrows of a bad game and found our remedy in a few six-packs at Market Basket.

Last year I reviewed several pumpkin beers, and I wish that this one made it to my review.  If you want to talk about a smooth pumpkin taste, you can find it right here.  I liked the dark caramel color and the light aroma from the glass.  I rank this higher than Blue Moon’s Harvest Moon but a little below Dogfish Head’s Punkin.  I really enjoyed this beer, and I’m glad that I finally found it.

To enhance the flavor my buddy had an idea.  Take your pint glass and wet the rim with orange juice (stickier than water), then mix sugar, cinnamon and brown sugar on a plate.  Twist your rim in the grainy mix, turn it right side up and pour in your pumpkin ale.  Does it help?  Oh yes, and you can look cool in front of all your friends at the same time.  I know, I know, you can thank me the next time you see me at the bar. Buy me a pint, we can discuss something semi-important.

I suggest searching high and low for this beer, unless you have a friend in upstate New York. You’ll be rewarded with what you find in your glass.  Never give up hope, you’ll find that beer someday. I did.
