Agave: not just for tequila anymore. That’s right folks, on a recent beer expedition to a new store I found, there were a few bottles of this interesting looking ale staring me in the face. I am by no means a stranger to this delicious nectar, and neither is my colleague Jason, whether it is used as a sweetener in tea or lifting my spirits in a margarita; agave nectar is very tasty. The thought of a beer devoted to this wonderful cactus byproduct intrigued me enough to buy a bottle and take it home with me.
Waiting for the prime opportunity, Mexican stuffed peppers, I decided to give this bad boy a shot and see if it lived up to my expectations. Removing it from the fridge, I poured it out in a glass and noted the cool golden color. The aroma coming off the rim wasn’t so bad and reminded me of a typical wheat beer. However, the taste is what matters here.
At first I didn’t notice anything and sipped for a few minutes until I realized: I had no idea what I was looking for to begin with. If I drink a fruit beer, I expect that flavor, if I drink a coffee stout, I should see some grounds floating around. For this beer, I didn’t know what to expect and I was almost ready to give up when I noticed that this beer was very smooth. There was a slight sweetness lingering there that made the last half of my glass drain rather quick.
If anything, I can say that this beer was rare and I was happy to come across a bottle. The sweet flavor lasted long enough to make you need to drink more in order to taste it again. I’m happy to report that this wasn’t agave with a side of beer, no; this was a good beer with a twist that I’ll look for again.
