Lurking behind all of those summer and spring beers was this beast of a stout. I had purchased this a few months ago with the intention of drinking in colder weather; instead I had it on a rainy evening hoping to illicit the same response. The cold chill seemed to help my mood for drinking a stout in the early parts of summer.
Brew Dog is based in Scotland and made headlines for themselves by brewing two high potency beers: Tactical Nuclear Penguin (32%) and Sink the Bismarck (41%). This beer was only 8%, not bad for an imperial stout. I do like their motto: beer was never meant to be bland, tasteless and apathetic. The store where I bought this from had a few other brews to pick from and only allowed each person one bottle, due to limited quantity and the rarity it is to find it stateside.
Enough of that now, I poured out this Coca Cola-like beverage in my large glass and let it sit for a few minutes. The beer had been in the fridge and I didn’t notice any bitter flavor. It did have that coffee, caramel taste that most imperials have. The body was jet black and reminded me of thin molasses. There wasn’t a strong aroma that I noticed either.
As the beer warmed some of that bitter jumped out and settled on my tongue. I wasn’t prepared for an 8% beer either, since I’ve been drinking 4%-5%’s as of late, as I was finishing I noticed the effects taking over. I will say that I did enjoy this beer, next time I’ll share with a friend or pace myself. Keep your eyes out for these guys, when they say ‘Extreme Beers’ they aren’t joking.
