It's the end of March, and tonight it's a brisk 34 degrees in Baltimore (which is friggin' stupid) and that calls for only one thing: whisky.
I was recently sent two bottles of spirits by a nice woman on behalf of Cruzan Rum, one of which I will be reviewing tonight. To make sure the mood is just right for such a chilly evening, I've got the lights turned down low, I've put on some Poe and I'm ready to go.
I've never had any interest in Canadian whiskies. I like Canada for its beautiful scenery and its kind and generous

The Bluecoat Dirty Gin Martini: Pretty Good!
by Jason Lightner on March 23rd, 2011 | Liquor
Ah, the martini... An iconic drink popularized by the ease of bootleg gin production during Prohibition and made even more popular as the signature drink of James Bond. He got it wrong, however, with the "shaken and not stirred" bit. The perfect way to prepare a martini is with a small dash of SHUT THE HELL UP AND ENJOY YOUR DRINK!
The first thing a bartender will do if you order your martini with that line is roll their eyes and then proceed to make it however he or she wants to make it because unless you really

Cold Fire: Esmé Vodka
by Jason Lightner on March 2nd, 2011 | Liquor
Recently I had the opportunity to try a delicious vodka out of France. Esmé vodka is a smooth and delicate vodka that is easy on the palate and easy on the wallet. You see, every Saturday, my favorite liquor store does wine and liquor tastings and it just so happened I was there when they were sampling this wonder of a spirit.
I strode into the store with my wonderful girlfriend, in search of some delicious red wine. What we found, however, was much more intriguing than grapes. As you may know, I'm not one for sipping vodka.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask: Return to Islay
by Jason Lightner on February 25th, 2011 | Liquor
Good day to you, esteemed reader! It's been some time since we last visited our good friend Laphroaig and today we will remedy that. You see, I've missed the ol' chap dearly and I can't even begin to tell you what a pleasure it will be to reminisce with him again. For this, we will journey to the isle of Islay, Scotland.
Oh! My, how times change. When we last saw Laphroaig he was but ten years old. He is now slightly older, with a bit more charisma. I wouldn't dare to call him Laphroaig Ten Year now... he's deserving

Arran 12 Year Old – Single Cask: The Bold and the Beautiful
by Jason Lightner on February 2nd, 2011 | Liquor
When we were last here, we were enjoying some delicious Scotch whisky. My, how times change...
The same glass desk rests before us, dimly lit by the sterile glow of the monitor. Meanwhile, the same box, with the same words printed on it and the same small glasses laying inside of it sits idly by, waiting for its moment. That moment, fortunately, is now. This is where our journey changes pace. We are in a new venue; the air is colder and we are enjoying the thrash-metal of the first Metallica album. Our companion is new as well. Meet
