Hendrick’s Gin: ‘Scuse Me While I Kiss the Sky

It’s almost Thanksgiving, and I’m feeling a bit nostalgic. You see, nearly two years ago I was introduced to what could quite possibly be my favorite gin. Interestingly and appropriately enough, it’s not your ordinary gin. Oh, no, this one is special. The elixir in question, is a little gem called Hendrick’s.

A Scottish gin, Hendrick’s is produced by William Grant & Sons (who also happen to produce The Balvenie) and has had the honor of being named “Best Gin in the World” by The Wall Street Journal in 2003, and has won various other awards and accolades. One sip, and you’ll know exactly why.

The hook to Hendrick’s is not the juniper essence that permeates the gin – that’s standard, and this gin is anything but standard. Instead, Hendrick’s grabs you with a kiss of cucumber and a hint of rose petal. This adds to the gin’s already complex bouquet, making it the most fragrant and delicious brand of gin I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying.

The classic way to enjoy Hendrick’s is on the rocks, with some tonic water and a slice of cucumber for garnish – this is the perfect gin and tonic. Don’t sell this one short, however. Hendrick’s is versatile enough to make even seasoned martini drinkers question their choice of spirits. I’ve found that two and a half ounces of Hendrick’s, along with a half ounce each of dry and sweet vermouth, shaken with the coldest ice you can get, makes for one smashingly perfect martini. That’s just me, though. You should feel free to experiment on your own.

You can find Hendrick’s in its unassuming brown bottle in most liquor stores for around thirty or forty dollars. It’s not nearly as inexpensive as some other brands, but this one is definitely worth the price of admission.

For a long time Bombay Sapphire was my weapon of choice for gin. Then last summer I was introduced to Hendrick’s and I’m a changed gin drinker. Excellent choice sir.

I, too, have become a fan of Hendrick’s. When spending time at a bar in which the bartender’s talents are uncertain, a Hendrick’s and tonic is my safe choice.
