In a triumphant return to the Strangebrew Tavern I thought there was no better way to celebrate the arrival of warm weather than to try a new summer ale. The Brew looked like they had some new taps put in since the last time I was there, and it was a tough choice, but I went with the Magic Hat since it was looking right at me.
When the pint arrived I noticed the bright red and orange color of the beer. It reminded me of a blood orange with a lot more haze. Since it came from the tap it was pretty cold and I found it to be smooth without much of a bite. I did notice some hint of apricots that gave it a little kick but not much.
I waited for the pint to come to room temperature and it really never did. The problem with drinking cold tap beer is that it stays cold for a long time and I just want to drink it rather than give it a chance to open up. This beer reminded me a weak #9, which wasn’t bad, I was just looking for something different from these guys. I don’t blame the brewers at all, I have a feeling that had I bought a bottle and tried it at home the results would have been different than on tap.
Some beers do very well on tap and some just blend in with others. I have to say that this beer was one that blended. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t order it again, I would consider it an alternative to other dull summer ales, I just wasn’t very impressed. No matter what, you have to hand it to Magic Hat they do know how to craft interesting beers with catchy names.
