Bottle/Tap: Bottle, pint+2

When I walk by the craft beer section of the local grocery store, this beer seems to stare me down.  I am no stranger to the beers of Samuel Smith I’ve enjoy everything that I’ve tried, and this particular brew remained an enigma.  The price tag was none too hefty, thus prompting my decision to pick up a bottle and see if the beer could live up to my expectations.  These guys brew oatmeal stouts and other dark ales; what could they know about fruit beers?  Shows what I know.

If you’ll recall the Fort that I sampled a few weeks back, I can draw many comparisons to these brews.  First, and foremost, after removing the cap there was an overwhelming smell of sweet strawberries coming from this bottle.  I’m a fellow who likes fresh strawberries, so this beer got a few points.  Next the color was very close to the Fort, a copper-like color, and this beer had a nice red tint going on which made it look classy.

Things were starting to look very good for this beer, and I didn’t want to ruin anything by a weak strawberry flavor, so I closed my eyes, held my nose and took a drink.  Sweetness, the beer itself was very sweet with no trace of bitter and a very weak ale flavor.   I’m glad there wasn’t a strong ale or lager flavor to this beer, as I think it would have pulled from the end product.

The body of this brew was also of a syrup quality, which held up well under a temperature change; I was impressed overall.  This fruit ale will be welcome to my fridge in the future, and you should welcome it to yours.  If you hate fruit beers that have weak taste, or if you are looking for something a little different, give this one a go.
