Wychwood Brewery, Hobgoblin

by J Frazzetta on December 26th, 2011 | Beer
Bottle/Tap – Bottle

Rather than spend Christmas with an elf or the  Grinch, I thought to invite a different creature over for holiday festivities.  Yes, I know this makes me sound like I take in stray fictional creatures, but what can I say besides: I’m excited for next December already.  That is another tale for another time, Avid Reader, and today I’m going to tell you about another small troublesome character, not to be confused with a Hobbit, who is often helpful yet mischievous: the hobgoblin.

This odd shaped bottle spent some quality time in the fridge cooling

Fuller’s, Vintage Ale 2010

by J Frazzetta on December 5th, 2011 | Beer
Bottle/Tap: Bottle

Some beers taste better on someone else’s tab, even if that tab happens to be gift certificates to a fancy restaurant you wouldn’t otherwise patronize.  On such an occasion, we happened to be drawn toward Riddles Tavern which is located within Buckley’s Great Steaks.  I like other brews by Fuller’s and didn’t have a chance to give this a shot when it was released some months back; noticing it on the menu, I opted for a bottle and got to keep it afterward.  This was number 114,291 of 125,000.

The interesting thing about this brew is the mixture

Rogue Ales, Hazelnut Brown Nectar

by J Frazzetta on October 31st, 2011 | Beer
Bottle/Tap: Bottle, 22 ounce

With the first snow fall hitting New Hampshire last week (WTH right?), I thought it appropriate to sample a brown ale for the impending chill.  Although an imperial porter would have been better in retrospect, I elected to try something that was lighter in body mass yet huge on flavor.  The folks at Rogue Ales do an excellent job of producing unique beers with catchy names and sharp tastes.  I’m happy to report that this beer has earned a spot as one of my favorites.

Taking out the big glass, I had this sitting in the

Sam’l Smith, Organic Strawberry Fruit Ale

by J Frazzetta on September 19th, 2011 | Beer
Bottle/Tap: Bottle, pint+2

When I walk by the craft beer section of the local grocery store, this beer seems to stare me down.  I am no stranger to the beers of Samuel Smith I’ve enjoy everything that I’ve tried, and this particular brew remained an enigma.  The price tag was none too hefty, thus prompting my decision to pick up a bottle and see if the beer could live up to my expectations.  These guys brew oatmeal stouts and other dark ales; what could they know about fruit beers?  Shows what I know.

If you’ll recall the Fort that

Thomas Hooker Brewing Company, Watermelon Ale

by J Frazzetta on September 12th, 2011 | Beer
Bottle/Tap: Bottle

When I was a kid I used to love to get Ring Pops; remember those things?  My favorite was the cherry flavor because they were the sweetest ones.  Second to the cherry was the watermelon flavor.  Funny how watermelon itself doesn’t taste like ‘watermelon flavor’; they have to add four tons of sugar to get that sweetness, which watermelon has naturally.  Never in my wildest dreams did I think a beer could capture that watermelon flavor.  Well, kids, I’m here to tell you that sometimes dreams can come true.

To heighten my childish fantasy, I decided to cook up
