Bottle/Tap: 16 ounce can
Despite what the groundhog told us, spring has come a little early this year. The good folks at Narragansett thought it would be nice to share a few cans of their spring offering and nothing makes the weather warmer than a free one or two. For a long time I thought the only kind of bock beers you would buy are dark winter type ales like Chocolate Bock. It never occurred to me that bock beers are really made for the spring time. With this new information, I tried this beer under a different light.

I know what you’re thinking and I don’t care: it is never too early to be thinking about spring/summer beers. Trust me, if you live in the frigid north, AKA New Hampshire, you’d be bathing in spring ales if it meant the weather would warm up. Not that I haven’t considered it and if I did I would never tell you folks. To say the least, this week I dug up a wheat beer that I had for a while and have been meaning to taste.

With the recent heat wave here in New Hampshire (it was almost 40 last week), I thought it would be nice to sample a beer that wasn’t brewed for the Arctic Tundra. This particular beer was a limited release from last spring, but oh well -- better late than never. Before drinking this beer I thought it would be smart to do some reading on braggots. This style of beer is a close cousin to meads, which means it contains honey. The drink itself was mentioned in some writings by Chaucer. Being the literary type,

Sometimes I buy beers based on the label, sometimes I buy beers based on the name; this beer falls into the latter category. Without doing any research, I thought that Beerlao was a funny name for a brewery and picked up a stray bottle when I happened to be out. After checking the Internets I discovered that Beerlao Brewing Company is the official beer of Laos. While I was nowhere near the Mekong River, I was still able to enjoy this beer in the comforts of my own home.

Lagunitas Brewing Company, Maximus IPA

I’ve been highlighting several porters the past few weeks and it dawned on me that there are other beers you can drink that can still warm you to the core and not appear jet black. For instance, we have IPA’s, which are good whenever you need a kick in the head or just some bite. This IPA is no exception and was heavy on bite with some kick as well. A while back I had bought another beer by Lagunitas yet failed to write about it; not this time -- I even wrote myself a note to remember.
