Fall is a strange time of year in the food and beverage world. Half of the menus you see feature items that stretch out bright, fresh summer flavors as long as possible. The rest look forward to the warm, hearty cuisine we'll be eating all winter. The drinks that suit the seasons change as well. In the summer, we want cool, long, light drinks with flavors that refresh and then leave the palate quickly - a French 75, a mint julep, maybe a chardonnay (if nobody's looking). In the winter? Hi, everyone. We are blessed to be New Englanders this time of year. It's fall, and the beauty of our beautiful state in its full, majestic glory.
A few years, I attempted to create a cocktail that was reflective of our state, and the town of Hollis where I grew up. With much deliberation, usually after hours breaking down the bar after all the customers had left (and after a glass or two of chewy, smoky, cherry tinged Zinfandel), I would begin my creative work behind the bar. Last Saturday was filled with events for our family. Our morning was spent watching our oldest run in a regional cross-country meet. Although the sun was shining, it was a chilly morning to be standing outside. In the afternoon, our family went apple picking at a local orchard. By mid-afternoon, it had warmed considerably, making this outdoor adventure more enjoyable for those prone to cold fingers and toes.
As the night would be cold, we purchased apple cider to turn into a warm evening drink. I never had made mulled cider previously, but it seemed like a simple recipe to master.
