Vermouth has lost a lot of its charm in the last 50 years or so of popular drinking. Today, it's used almost exclusively in the making of martinis and manhattans - with a short pour for the manhattan, and just a couple of dashes for the martini. In fact, so-called "sophisticated" drinkers will order their martinis "dry" (for just one dash), "extra dry" (for even less), or "bone-dry" (for no vermouth at all.)
This all confuses me, since a martini is supposed to be a cocktail, of which vermouth is a crucial (if not secondary) ingredient. I would think a sophisticated

Whiskey doesn't play well with others.
Sure, it stars in a number of cocktails - a Manhattan, an Old Fashioned, a Sazerac - but there aren't many cocktails in which whiskey is a complementary flavor. The very reasons we love it - the assertive, smoky kick of a good Scotch, the oakey, sour flavor of a bourbon, the sharp, tart sweetness of a rye, the liquid-lightning kick of an Irish whiskey - make any cocktail based on the spirit fraught with peril. The whiskey will simply overpower everything else in the mix.
This doesn't hold true for mellow, blended whiskeys - often

However, this time we added another friend of mine to the mix.
For old time’s sake I had to have at least one of these beers unadulterated. Pouring it in a glass I found the golden color inviting and that

Fuzzy Navel 2.0
by Michele on August 28th, 2009 | Cocktails, Mixed Drinks
My best friend always has enjoyed a Fuzzy Navel as a cocktail. For me it used to be too sweet and too peachy. As life can be, some things change, and some things stay the same. For example, I now enjoy cocktails that are peach in flavor, but I still don't like drinks that are overly sweet.
After dinner last night, my husband and I thought a cocktail would be a nice way to end our workdays. Sure, I could have made something from our usual repertoire, be it a dirty martini for him or a Vodka and Tonic Restyled
