Growing up in California, I thought that everyone knew that Zinfandel was a red wine. Zinfandel is probably the most symbolic grape of California wine making since it’s planted in over ten percent of all California vineyards.
It wasn’t until I moved to New England that I discovered when most people hear “Zinfandel” they think of a sweet, rose wine.

Belfast Bay Brewing Co., McGovern’s Oatmeal Stout

After a long day of seeing family, eating and then eating some more it was about time to wind down from another successful Thanksgiving. You may have read that there are wise choices for after dinner drinks to ease your stomach. Instead of following those directions (because Grappa is pretty terrible, let me just say) I decided to pay dues to a beer that I had tried once but never given my full attention to. Based on a recommendation from a colleague, I wanted to give this oatmeal stout another chance.

Gallo Vermouth Comes Up Empty

After my previous gin review, I found it interesting that I had yet to give my thoughts on gin's traditional companion, vermouth. Mainly used as a mixing agent or apéritif, vermouth is a fortified wine flavored with various dry herbs and spices. This week, I went the cheap route and picked up a bottle of Gallo Extra Dry Vermouth to sample and toy around with.
Produced by Gallo Vineyards in Modesto, California, this vermouth has at least one good thing going for it right off the bat – California grapes are typically pretty darn good. I attempted to get

Casa Solar Tempranillo 2008

I'm usually a bit wary of bragging when I find a bargain at one of my local wine stores. Many great deals can be had in stores' sale baskets, or in end-of-bin sales. Who's to say the wine will ever be available at that price again? And if not, what's the point in bragging about it?
This week's wine was a bargain for me -- I found it in a 2-for-$10 bin -- but a bit of research (how did people ever write wine reviews before the Internet?) shows that it usually slots into a $6-$7 per bottle price range.

After looking through my cooler the other day, I realized that I had several fall beers to polish off before the true winter season set in and I would be turning to darker brews. Despite the tease we got at the end of last month, the temperature has returned to normal here in the northeast and I can get back on track to drinking fall beers. The first of my fall beers comes to us from Magic Hat all the way up in South Burlington, Vermont. I’m a sucker for most of their beers and this one was
