Gift Ideas for Home Bartenders

by Dennis Mayer on December 8th, 2011 | Ask the Bartender
I have several friends that enjoying making cocktails at home when entertaining.  They have the basic tools: martini shaker, shot glass, and martini picks.  What would be other tools that could be given as a holiday gift?

This is a tough order to fill, since a lot of bartenders' tools are small, and economical enough that they wouldn't make great gifts. I'll assume that in addition to the tools you mentioned, your friends already have corkscrews and bottle openers. If you're sure your friends don't have the following tools, you could put together a nice gift basket with a strainer,

Double Dilemma

I don't like the taste of alcohol and I'm on a diet so I can't spend a lot of calories on a drink.  What drinks can you suggest that:
1. don't taste like alcohol and
2. are low in calories?

Other than water, seltzer, black coffee, or diet soda?

Honestly, there's only so much we can do to reduce the amount of calories in a drink. Each shot of liquor (or five-ounce glass of wine, or 12-ounce beer) contains about 100 calories that come strictly from the alcohol. Science has yet to give us a diet alcohol (and I'm not sure we should

Last Saturday we had a date night planned with our friends, OT and Vicki.  After dinner at a restaurant we planned to return to their house and work on the thousand piece puzzle OT had received.  I asked, jokingly, if we would be

Not Your Typical Cran-Peach

by Michele on October 2nd, 2009 | Cocktails, Martinis, Mixed Drinks
When you travel down the juice aisle at the grocery store, it seems that there is an endless array of cranberry juice combinations. Cran-apple, cran-raspberry, cran-cherry, cran-peach, and more.  When I was creating cocktails for my husband and me recently, I decided to give a try at making my own cranberry concoction.  What I made was quite tasty but not something that you could find in the juice aisle or offer to anyone under the age of 21.

Although cranberry juice can be tart, the use of peach liqueur gave a bit of sweetness to the drink.  I think it could

Peach-Cherry Martini, Two Ways

by Michele on September 18th, 2009 | Cocktails, Martinis
We had the pleasure of my mom's company for a couple weeks at the end of summer.  While I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her and my family, I think the best part of the trip was an evening I spent with just her.  As my husband was away on business and the kids weren't home, the two of us were left to our own devices.

I had told my mom about Tapas Night dining that my husband and I enjoy on most Mondays.  She always seemed interested in the dishes, so I decided that she and I would have
