Beer

Bottle/Tap: Bottle, 22 ounce

With the recent heat wave here in New Hampshire (it was almost 40 last week), I thought it would be nice to sample a beer that wasn’t brewed for the Arctic Tundra.  This particular beer was a limited release from last spring, but oh well — better late than never.  Before drinking this beer I thought it would be smart to do some reading on braggots.  This style of beer is a close cousin to meads, which means it contains honey. The drink itself was mentioned in some writings by Chaucer.  Being the literary type, I decided to give this beer a fair shot.

Removing the bottle from the fridge, I poured some out in my big glass and let it sit for a minute or two.  The color was hazy with a golden hue and had a sweet aroma which might have been due to the pear juice.  I have never eaten a prickly pear, but they do look interesting.  When I was ready, I took a taste and found the beer to be quite refreshing.  As I swirled it in my glass I noticed there was a syrup quality to the body of the beer itself.

This beer wasn’t bitter and it wasn’t very sweet, there was a happy medium in my glass.  You notice the dry flavor when you first taste it, yet as you finish out there is a sweet aftertaste.  I enjoyed this beer over the course of the evening and it was a shame no one else was around to share it with.  Just meant there was more for me!  I have never had a proper mead before so I have nothing to compare this against, however, I’m going to see about finding some local mead to put this beer into perspective.  You may be able to find this beer in a few places, if not, I would suggest picking another kind of braggot and saving it for summer evening.
